Recent Paintings exhibition-catalogue lithograph, 1953

Figures in black and white
White figure-like shapes emerge from a dense black field, surrounded by scattered dots and fine linear marks. A star-like form at the lower left and an elongated shape along the bottom carry the eye beyond the central image.

Looking at the lithograph
The composition builds its rhythm through contrasts: broad black passages and open white shapes, soft-edged textures and precise lines, a central upright figure and smaller forms around its edges. Rounded white spots break up the dark lower field, while the pale paper frames the image.
The catalogue title refers to an exhibition of recent paintings marking the artist’s sixtieth birthday. Here, the limited black-and-white palette draws attention to the interaction of shape, texture and empty space.
