Joan Miró: Ink, Letters and Les Essencies de la Terra
In Joan Miró’s For “Les Essencies de la Terra” (1968), black ink carries both the force of a broad gesture and the intimacy of handwriting. Letters, curves and small symbols share a pale sheet, inviting the eye to move between reading and looking.
A large gesture and small signs
The most immediate feature is a sweeping black curve near the center. Its weight gives the composition a strong anchor, but the surrounding marks keep it from feeling static. Thin vertical lines, rounded dots and star-like shapes draw attention outward toward the edges of the paper.
Below and beside the curve, handwritten letters vary in size and spacing. Their irregular arrangement creates a visual rhythm: a dense passage gives way to a pause, a long stroke answers a short one, and open paper separates one cluster from the next. The letters can be approached as shapes as well as language.
Looking beyond color
Miró is often associated with vivid color, yet this work rewards attention to a narrower set of contrasts. Heavy and light, curved and angular, filled and empty: these relationships provide the movement. In the unframed image, the finer strokes and the intervals of untouched paper are particularly clear.
This is Hadadi Fine Art’s visual reading of the photographed work. It offers a starting point for looking, rather than a fixed interpretation of every symbol.
Writing and image in Miró’s art
The meeting of image and language belongs to a wider strand of Miró’s practice. MoMA’s account of the artist describes how his work combined recognizable subjects, abstraction, personal symbols and text. It also discusses his peinture-poésie, or painting-poetry, in which words and forms become part of the same pictorial space. That background provides a useful way to approach the shifting relationship between lettering and gesture here.
