French painter renowned for his atmospheric landscapes and seascapes. Born in Avignon, he trained in Rome, where he absorbed the traditions of classical and Italianate painting. Vernet became especially admired for his dramatic marine scenes, depicting storms, shipwrecks, and Mediterranean ports with a blend of realism and poetic grandeur. Commissioned by King Louis XV, he created the famous series Views of the Ports of France, which secured his reputation as one of the leading landscape and marine painters of the 18th century. His work influenced later generations of Romantic artists.
