SIR WILLIAM BEECHY

Was a prominent English portrait painter of the Georgian era. Trained at the Royal Academy Schools, he became known for his elegant and refined portraits of aristocracy, politicians, and members of the royal family. Appointed official portraitist to Queen Charlotte in 1793, he gained wide acclaim for his large group portrait of King George III and the Prince of Wales at a military review. Elected a Royal Academician in 1798 and knighted in 1798, Beechey’s work bridged the styles of Sir Joshua Reynolds and Sir Thomas Lawrence, marking him as one of the leading portraitists of late 18th- and early 19th-century Britain.
