Bwato Makano is a Congolese artist from the Nakivale refugee settlement in Uganda, now based in Kampala. His journey into art began at age four, but it became a vital means of expression following the loss of his parents in the DRC civil war in 2018. Makano’s work emerges from his personal experiences of grief and uncertainty, using art as a way to address and process his emotions.
Makano's art focuses on themes of identity, resilience, and social justice. He creates powerful visual narratives that challenge stereotypes and amplify underrepresented voices. His work reflects a deep commitment to societal issues and personal introspection. In addition to his artistic practice, Makano volunteers with Faces Up Uganda, mentoring young artists and promoting messages of equality, hope, and unity. His name, Makano, meaning “intersection,” symbolizes his role in bridging diverse perspectives through art.
